After the hugely successful Boodles May Festival, Chester Racecourse is about to hold its popular family-friendly race day – “Roman Day” – on May 28 at the world’s oldest racecourse.
Chester Racecourse’s ICM Stellar Sports Roman Day aims to celebrate racing, families and the city’s history through a parade and an outdoor event, which features Roman-themed activities.
The racecourse will offer free admission for children with an adult ticket holder on ICM Stellar Sports Roman Day, and to complement the racing entertainment, the racecourse will offer a number of activities that will keep young racegoers entertained.
The racecourse grounds are to be transformed into a young Roman’s play zone and dress-up area where children can adorn themselves in Imperial outfits, complete with Centurion’s swords and shields.
There will be lots of opportunities to learn a little too, with an exhibition of roman artefacts from Chester’s Grosvenor Museum, and of course a spectacular parade of (real !) Romans marched from the city centre down to the racecourse and through the grounds.
Alongside all this will be archery, Roman-themed crafting, an ancient woodland workshop, face painting, garden games and giant inflatables.
Louise Stewart, Chief Executive Officer, Chester Racecourse said:
Our much-loved Roman Day is a celebration of racing, families and the city’s amazing history. We’re not as old as the Romans but Chester Racecourse is the oldest operating racecourse in the world – so we love to celebrate our heritage and just like the Romans – we know what makes for a wonderful spectacle and a good day out.’
‘As well as the excitement of the races themselves, there will be plenty to enjoy for families this year, including a parade and Roman-themed activities.
